Release Notes: ESP-Install for Windows XP/2003 IA-64

Note: This version is for IA-64 systems running Windows XP or Windows 2003 only.

ESP-Install is a command line program for supported Windows systems that can be used to install, modify and remove ESP serial hubs that use the serial redirection connection method. By specifying a script file, you may streamline the process of installing multiple hubs. The program uses a series of commands (keywords and keyword/value pairs) to identify address information, assign logical COM ports to physical ports and specify other driver-related information. You may also use this program to remove (uninstall) previously installed drivers for ESP serial hubs. A hub may be removed in the same script file that installs other ESP hubs. This allows you to update a drive without having to reboot the ESP hubs.

This application if for administrators who are familiar with Windows driver features and terminology.
Running ESP-Install There are two ways to run the ESP-Install program at the command prompt.

  • When you type espinstall.exe at the command prompt with no parameters, a help screen will be displayed. You may then enter commands to install one hub at a time.
    espinstall.exe

During this process, you may access help information by entering espinstall /help. You may generate a current list of port mappings by entering espinstall /list.

  • To automate the installation process, you may create a script file that contains all the commands to install up to 100 ESP hubs, and then specify that filename when you start
    the program.
    espinstall.exe /text <filename>

The results of the ESP-Install commands are written to the files ESPsummary.log (if the requested operations completed successfully) and ESPinstall.log, which are located in the same subdirectory as ESPinstall.exe.

  • 0 = the command(s) completed successfully
  • 2 = the ESP-Install program could not communicate with the ESP hub (check the Ethernet cable connection)
  • 3 = an ESP hub with the specified address is already installed
  • 8 = an error occurred

You may also log additional information with the Debug and Windowdebug commands.
The ESP hubs do not have to be rebooted for changes to take effect.
